Castor Oil

Mad River Makings - DIY Eyelash Serum

Why These Ingredients?

Coconut Oil – The vitamins and essential fatty acids in coconut oil nourishes, thickens, and lengthens hairs.

Vitamin E – This antioxidant helps repair follicle damage and reduces inflammation. Healthy follicles encourage hair growth!

Castor Oil – Contains Ricinoleic acid, one of the essential amino acids required by the human body. The Omega-9 fatty acids penetrate hair follicles to remedy hair loss and promote growth!

Lavender Oil – Not only does it smell heavenly, it improves blood circulation and hair growth for any and all hair types.

Aloe Vera – Aloe coats your lashes with proteolytic enzymes which conditions your hair and promotes growth.

Other materials

– Empty mascara tubes (searched far and wide at local stores and finally found them online here)

– A dropper

– Paper towels

– A small jar or container

– A whisk

Total cost for all these materials is right under $50. All these ingredients can easily fill 10 or more tubes of serum so it is soo worth the initial cost! There are a few ways to make it cheaper if that seems like too much up front.

Fractionated coconut oil is usually twice as expensive as a jar of pressed coconut oil, but yields a smoother final product . Castor oil marketed as a beauty product can be 3x the price as that marked as a laxative (one of castor oils many uses). Also, organic products are more expensive but can also yield higher quality serums. With that being said, lets move on to the recipe!

Eyelash and Eyebrow Serum

Yields: 3-4 mascara tubes of serum

1. Start by laying everything out on a paper towels. These ingredients are oily and get messy quick!

2. Clean out the empty mascara tubes and lay out to dry while you prepare the batch.

3. Using a clean jar or bowl, start adding 1 tbsp. fractionated coconut oil, 1 tbsp. castor oil, 1/2 tbsp. vitamin E, 1/2 tbsp. aloe vera, and 3-6 drops of lavender oil. To make a bigger or smaller batch, the ratio is 2 parts coconut oil and castor oil for 1 part vitamin E and aloe with a splash of lavender.  (hint: if you are using pressed coconut oil, melt it before mixing)

4: Mix the ingredients with a whisk or small bullet blender to save time. Since these ingredients are oil based (minus aloe), emulsification is pretty simple. The aloe may separate slightly in the batch but blending the serum and stirring/shaking before each use will help!

5. Using a clean dropper fill the empty mascara tubes until mostly full, leaving room to put the mascara wand back in.

There you have it!

Put this serum on just like mascara after showering or removing makeup (avoid getting this in your eyes). Works great on eyebrows as well!

Enjoy!
