DIY Hair Growth

I am all about trendy, up and coming products that fit my life and needs. I’m also super interested in the not-so-popular, kinda out there ways to go about the same business.

Some of my favorite hair growth products I use are mentioned here, but I decided to try my hand at making some of my own. Enter: Pintrest. What an amazing tool we have to learn and grow and create!

I found a few pins mentioning an onion and aloe recipe that combats hair loss and promotes new growth! I was a little hesitant to dabble in the onion realm. Onions are my weakness. I don’t just get watery eyes. I full on open the faucets of eye-bawling and don’t stop for 20 minutes. I’ll have red eyes for the rest of the day. Onions and I do not get along.

I’ve found ways around that, but still. Putting onion juice on my head? Yikes. I did some research that put my onion head hesitations aside. I learned that onion and aloe do quite a number for your hair and scalp!

Onion + Hair = Happy locks

Onion

*Onion nourishes hair follicles and restores lost nutrients

*Sulfur rich onions minimize breakage and thinning

*Anti-bacterial properties fight scalp infections

*Improves blood circulation which promotes growth

*Adds volume and shine

Aloe

*Aloe contains proteolytic enzymes which repairs dead skin cells on the scalp

*Acts as a conditioner and leaves hair smooth and shiny

*Reduces dandruff and prevents itchy scalp

After making my own DIY eyelash serum I knew that lavender oil had some hair growth properties of its own. This also helps with the onion smell and makes it halfway decent olfactory experience.

Lavender Oil

*lavender improves blood circulation

*prevents hair loss and promotes growth

*lavender oil a powerful moisturizer, antimicrobial and antiseptic

After doing the research, I decided to give it a go. What did I have to loose?

Here’s How You Can Do it Too:

Ingredients:

*One medium white onion

*5 to 8 branches from an aloe plant (fresh aloe is a must!)

*Lavender oil

Other materials:

*Cutting board

*Blender or food processor (I used a small bullet blender)

*Metal strainer

*Spoon to scoop out fresh aloe

*A spare jar or glass to strain the final product in to

*(optional) ski goggles to prevent onion tears

The Nitty Gritty:

1) Peel and quarter the onion so it fits in the blender

2) Blend the living bejesus out of that tear jerker.

3) Cut off one side of the aloe branch (Aloe branches are rounded on one side and flat on the other. It worked best to peel back the flat side using the knife, kind of like filleting a fish)

4) Use the spoon to scoop out the fresh aloe. (Use enough Aloe to have a 80/20 or 70/30 onion to aloe ratio)

5) Add the fresh aloe to the blender with the blended onion juice.

6) Add 6-10 drops of lavender oil. Blend again for a minute or so.

7) Use the metal strainer to filter out any chunks leftover (this step is only necessary if you’ll be using the final product in a spray bottle like I did. I used up some old product and saved the bottle for easy application)

Voila!

How To Use It:

The final product should look a little milky. It will separate a little as it sits so make sure you shake it up well before each application. To apply simply spray the product all over your scalp. For extra blood circulation to the scalp, spray the product all over, flip your hair upside down, and massage the product into your scalp for a few minutes. Focus on any places in particular you want hair growth.

Leave the product on for at least 45 minutes or more if you can tolerate the smell. It may have a slight tingling sensation but as long as it isn’t burning or uncomfortable, its a good thing! It will harden up a little the more it sits, also normal.

Wash your hair thoroughly after your time is up to get the onion smell out of your hair. I don’t normally use shampoo but I have to after using this spray.

Use 2-3x per week for best results!

My Experience:

So far I have been super happy with the results! My hair feels thicker after washing out this product and it definitely has more shine. My scalp feels softer and healthy. There are new baby hairs growing in where I have focused the product and massaging. I can’t wait to see where I’m at in another few weeks of trying this method!

I would have never thought to use these ingredients for hair growth, but I’m happy I did! What do you think? Have you used other bizarre ingredients as a remedy for hair growth or something else? I’d love to hear your experience!

Until then, madlove my friends.
