A List of 30 Before I’m 30

When I was 17 and some change, on the verge of high school graduation, I made a list. I numbered down the page from 1 to 18 and started filling it in. 18 things I wanted to do before I turned 18. Some were simple, like change my hair color. Others took practice, like learning “Blackbird” on guitar. And the rest took planning, like moving to an island over 3,000 miles away by myself.

This mini bucket list was complete by the eve of my 18th birthday, and I set off on my solo journey only 2 weeks later. This little list kept me going to finish the big (and not so big) things I had always craved. I wanted something, made it known, and set off with whatever means I had to make it real.

Now here I am, 2 months in to my 27th year, and I find myself making a list. I’ve numbered down the page from 1 to 30. Looking at the blank spaces. My pen pauses between lines, wondering what lays ahead. What great moments will become of these words? What paths will I choose based on these goals? I take each number seriously, recognizing how lofty these dreams are compared to my late teenage years. Most involve traveling, it’s no surprise life has shaped my passions around exploration. Some goals are inward, yearning to reach farther into my infinite self. And some are artistic, getting my business to grow and creative talents refined.

It’s All About Balance

While I stress the importance of staying present, it is so powerful for my mind to have something to reach for. Something to work for. I’m redefining success for what it really means to me. And crossing off my mini bucket list items is worth celebration. There is joy in the small corners of each day. There is bliss in accomplishments, and there is a great deal of happiness in the simple pleasures of existence.

Keep reaching. Keep growing. Push yourself, and recognize the outstanding fact that you have a 100% success rate of making it through life’s challenges thus far. You are amazing. Keep going, and may your grandest dreams be always within reach.
